Audi A4 to be Renamed A5, While A6 Set to Become A7

2024/07/15 Cars

Recently, Audi officially teased the next-generation A5 with a preview image, set to be unveiled globally on July 16 at 11 a.m. (GMT). Audi has announced a reshaping of its naming system, where odd-numbered models will feature internal combustion engines, while even-numbered models will be electrified. Therefore, the upcoming new A5 is essentially a refreshed version of the current A4, rebranded as the A5.

Audi CEO Gernot Dollner mentioned that the debut of the Q6 e-tron earlier this spring marks the beginning of a series of new product launches. Between 2024 and 2025, Audi plans to introduce over 20 new models, with 10 of them being fully electric. The new generation Audi A5 will be unveiled first on July 16, followed by the A6 e-tron at the end of July and the next-generation Q5 expected in the fall.

The new Audi A5 represents the brand's next-generation combustion engine vehicles. It's important to note the change in naming; this new model isn't a continuation of the current A5 but a rebranding of the A4. Domestically, the A4L will likely be renamed the A5L as part of this transition. After an 8-year interval, the new A4 (future A5) is finally receiving its generational upgrade.

Leaked images reveal a redesigned front end with a new polygonal grille, signaling a departure from Audi's current combustion engine lineup. The headlight design maintains Audi's signature style with an aggressive internal lighting layout. At the rear, a continuous taillight design enhances its three-dimensional appeal. Concept renders based on these leaks provide an early look at the upcoming model.

Meanwhile, the A6 e-tron represents Audi's first fully electric entry into the Sportback and estate car markets, offering a glimpse into the future of electric mobility. The third-generation Audi Q5, a classic model with a 15-year history, will continue to feature gasoline engines alongside these advancements.
