According to the latest report, Volkswagen is moving its electric vehicle research and development to its center in Anhui, China, called VCTC. This shift means that VCTC will now handle all the electric vehicle R&D for China, while Beijing will focus on hybrid projects. The new cars developed by VCTC will be produced and sold by Volkswagen’s joint ventures in China: Volkswagen Anhui, SAIC Volkswagen, and FAW-Volkswagen.
Volkswagen will develop its electric vehicles in China using two main platforms:
MEB Platform: A global electric vehicle platform that VCTC will adapt for the Chinese market.
CMP Platform: A platform specifically designed for China, with VCTC leading the development.
The move is described as shifting Volkswagen’s R&D eastward by 7,000 kilometers, with VCTC expected to become the “Chinese Wolfsburg” (Volkswagen's headquarters in Germany). VCTC currently has about 2,000 employees, with a goal to reach 3,000 by 2024.
