According to the latest reports, GAC Aion’s new smart eco-factory in Changsha, also known as the “Changsha Factory,” is set to open on August 21st. The factory will have the capacity to produce 200,000 electric vehicles (EVs) per year, with room to expand in the future. This move is expected to help turn the central region into a major auto production hub.
The Changsha branch of GAC Aion was established and construction began in October 2023 in the Changsha Economic Development Zone. The first phase of the project involved an investment of over 4 billion yuan. The factory is equipped with cutting-edge 4.0 smart technology, and it will produce one EV every 53 seconds. The first model rolling off the assembly line will be the second-generation AION V, with more models planned for the future.
GAC Aion’s Changsha branch explained that the company’s strategy involves setting up local factories and suppliers to build a complete industrial cluster around the main plant. The goal is to produce 9,000 EVs in the first month after full-scale production begins. By 2025, once production reaches full capacity, the factory is expected to generate over 20 billion yuan in value.
So far, the factory has attracted four suppliers—Otsuka, Xin Cheng, Hauster, and Xiangxin—to set up operations on-site, with five more suppliers establishing nearby facilities. The number of local suppliers around the factory has reached 20, and as production ramps up, more auto parts companies are expected to join in.
