China’s Light Truck Sales Hit 138,000 in July

In July 2025, China’s commercial vehicle sales rose 14% year on year, with the truck market also up 14%. Within the truck sector, light trucks are the largest and most competitive category. So how did they perform in July as the second half of the year began?

Light Trucks Sell 138,300 Units in July, Up 4% – Six Consecutive Months of Growth

According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), China’s truck sales in July totaled 264,400 units, down 16% from June but up 14% year on year. Light trucks sold 138,300 units, a month-on-month drop of 18% but a 4% increase compared with last year. This marks the sixth consecutive month of year-on-year growth.

Among truck sub-segments, heavy trucks grew the fastest at 46%. Light trucks and mini trucks grew 4% and 9% respectively, while medium trucks fell 19%. From January to July, truck sales rose 3% overall, while light trucks grew 6%, outperforming the broader truck market.

Looking at historical data, July light truck sales usually range between 110,000 and 150,000 units. This year’s 138,300 puts it in third place over the past decade. Cumulative sales from January to July reached 1.176 million units, also ranking third in the past ten years, and 71,700 units higher than the same period in 2024.

Six Automakers Exceed 10,000 Sales – Foton Above 20%, Farizon Rises Into Top Six

In July, six automakers sold more than 10,000 light trucks, one fewer than June. Foton remained number one with 29,200 units and a 21.12% market share. Changan, Great Wall, Dongfeng, JAC, and Farizon ranked second through sixth, each selling between 10,000 and 16,000 units, with market shares from 7.67% to 11.60%. SAIC Maxus, Sinotruk, Jiangling, and Shineray filled out the top ten, all selling over 6,000 units. The top ten together accounted for 88.68% of sales, with the top five holding 60.33%.

Year on year, eight of the top ten grew sales. Great Wall, Dongfeng, Farizon, Maxus, Shineray, Foton Sauvana, and BYD all posted double-digit gains, with BYD more than doubling its sales. Foton, Changan, and Sinotruk saw smaller, single-digit growth. Compared to June, rankings shifted: Great Wall rose to third, Farizon climbed to sixth, and Maxus moved to seventh, while Foton, Changan, JAC, Sinotruk, and Shineray held steady.

January–July Sales Up 6% – Farizon and BYD Show Strongest Growth

From January to July, light truck sales totaled 1.176 million units, up 6% year on year, or 71,700 more than the same period last year. Foton led with 258,200 units and a 21.99% share. Great Wall, Changan, JAC, and Dongfeng each sold over 100,000 units, with shares around 9%. Jiangling, Farizon, and Sinotruk all sold over 60,000, while Shineray and Maxus surpassed 50,000.

Farizon and BYD were the fastest growers, up 84% and 1006% respectively, making them key drivers of market growth. Sinotruk and Maxus also outpaced the market with gains of 19% and 28%. Foton and Great Wall grew in line with the overall 6% pace. JAC and Shineray increased but lagged behind the market, while some companies declined, with the worst falling 14%.

Compared with 2024, Farizon, Sinotruk, Maxus, and BYD all expanded their market share, with Farizon and BYD gaining more than two percentage points each. Rankings also shifted: Great Wall moved up to second place, JAC to fourth, and Farizon to seventh. Foton, Changan, Jiangling, Sinotruk, and Maxus kept their positions.

In July, China’s light truck market sold 138,300 units, up 4% year on year, marking six consecutive months of growth. From January to July, sales reached 1.176 million, up 6% and 71,700 units higher than last year. How long can this growth streak continue? The industry will be watching closely.
