According to data from the China Internal Combustion Engine Industry Association’s “Monthly Sales Report of China Internal Combustion Engine Industry,” in August 2025, the sales volume of multi-cylinder diesel engines (hereinafter referred to as diesel engines) reached 306,700 units, a month-on-month increase of 6.08% and a year-on-year increase of 7.15%. 2025 is Expected to Reach 3.9 Million Units
From January to August 2025, the diesel engine market showed a “V”-shaped trend in the first quarter, peaking at 443,000 units in March. Starting from April, the monthly sales volume continued to decline, with a month-on-month decrease every month until July.
The year-on-year and month-on-month growth in August 2025 was mainly due to the continuous growth in the commercial vehicle and heavy-duty truck markets over several months. In particular, the heavy-duty truck market saw a significant increase. In August, China’s heavy-duty truck market sales reached 91,600 units, surpassing the same period in the past four years, with a year-on-year increase of 47% and a month-on-month increase of 8%. The commercial vehicle market also achieved a year-on-year growth of 16.32%.
In terms of cumulative sales, from January to August 2025, the total sales volume of diesel engines was 2.75 million units, ranking fifth in the past eight years. In 2019, the diesel engine sales volume from January to August was 2.86 million units. The sales volume of diesel engines from January to August 2025 was 110,000 units less than the average annual sales volume. However, it is evident that there is a steady growth trend.
