According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), total commercial vehicle sales stood at 486,900 units in March, rising 9% from a year earlier. Truck sales outpaced the broader market, increasing 12% year-on-year to 440,000 units.

As the largest segment within the truck market, light trucks remained a key focus, although growth lagged behind other segments.
Light Truck Sales Recover but Lag Market Growth
In March, light truck sales totaled 234,300 units, up 100% month-on-month and 4% year-on-year, reversing a 23% decline in February.
The segment’s growth, however, trailed the overall truck market, which expanded 12% year-on-year.
All major truck segments posted gains:
Heavy trucks: +25%
Medium trucks: +25%
Mini trucks: +15%
Light trucks: +4%
Light trucks were the only segment to underperform the market average.
On a quarterly basis, the divergence remained.
From January to March, total truck sales rose 8% year-on-year, while light truck sales declined 3%, despite the contraction narrowing by 5 percentage points compared with February.
March Sales Near Historical Norms
March is typically a strong sales month for light trucks, and this year’s performance was broadly in line with historical trends.
At 234,300 units, March sales ranked second over the past decade. In most years, March volumes typically stand at around 200,000 units, with seven of the past ten years exceeding that level.
The March rebound also marked the highest monthly sales since April 2025 and the first time in 12 months that volumes surpassed 200,000 units.
Within the first quarter, monthly performance improved steadily, with January, February and March ranking fourth, sixth and second, respectively, over the past decade.
Q1 Sales Decline Narrows
For the first quarter of 2026, light truck sales totaled 510,900 units, down 3% year-on-year, equivalent to a decline of about 14,800 units compared with the same period last year.
Despite the drop, volumes remained slightly above the typical range of 400,000 to 500,000 units seen in recent years, ranking third over the past decade.
The quarterly trend showed a pattern of initial growth, followed by decline and subsequent recovery, with the year-on-year contraction narrowing to 3% by the end of March.
