Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles and Anjie Chudao Begin 1,500 Hydrogen Truck Project

2026/09/03 Trucks
Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle and Anjie Chudao have delivered the first 30 hydrogen fuel cell tractors under a cooperation project involving 1,500 hydrogen-powered heavy trucks.

The delivery ceremony was held in Wuhan on August 30. It marks the start of large-scale operations under the project and is another step in Dongfeng's development of hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles.

In March 2026, Dongfeng Automobile Trade and Anjie Chudao signed an agreement to promote the use of 1,500 hydrogen-powered heavy trucks.

The project will cover several types of vehicles, including tractors, cargo trucks, dump trucks, concrete mixer trucks and water tankers. The vehicles will be used in different transport and work applications.

The delivery of the first 30 trucks moves the project from small-scale testing to larger-scale commercial operations.

The two companies plan to use a “3 routes and 19 stations” hydrogen refueling network, together with Dongfeng's hydrogen technology, to develop an integrated operating model covering vehicles, transport routes, energy and services.

They also plan to put hydrogen heavy trucks into regular commercial operation on highways in Hubei, bringing the vehicles into real-world logistics applications.

Accelerating the Commercial Use of Hydrogen Trucks

As the global energy structure changes, low-carbon development is becoming increasingly important. China's 15th Five-Year Plan also lists hydrogen energy as a key area for developing future industries.

Dongfeng is using resources across its different business units to accelerate the development of hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles.

Dongfeng's commercial vehicle business is responsible for overall coordination, while Dongfeng's R&D General Institute provides technical support and Dongfeng Automobile Trade handles business cooperation.

Dongfeng is also working with the government of Hubei Province, Wuhan and Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone, as well as partners across the industry chain. The cooperation covers hydrogen production, storage, transportation, refueling and use.

Liu Licheng, general manager of Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle, said the project will make use of Dongfeng's hydrogen fuel cell technology and combine it with Anjie Chudao's real-world operating experience. The companies will continue to improve vehicle energy efficiency and reliability through actual operations.

Liu also called for closer cooperation among the partners to improve the competitiveness of hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles and support the development of China's hydrogen energy strategy in Hubei.

Wang Qibing, general manager of Anjie Chudao, said the cooperation will further strengthen the “Dongfeng Chudao” brand in the hydrogen heavy truck sector. Anjie Chudao will continue to improve local hydrogen infrastructure and accelerate the deployment of the 1,500 hydrogen heavy trucks.

Dongfeng Expands Its Hydrogen Vehicle Business

Dongfeng has been developing hydrogen technology and applying it in real-world scenarios for several years.

The company has now developed a hydrogen power product platform covering 20 kW to 400 kW. Its hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have achieved cumulative sales of more than 9,000 units, with operations in more than 40 cities across China.

Dongfeng is also leading the development of a cross-regional hydrogen highway demonstration route connecting Wuhan, Chongqing and Chengdu. Its demonstration operations are among the largest in the industry.

According to its product development plan, Dongfeng aims to achieve large-scale production of hydrogen heavy trucks in 2027, creating a foundation for wider commercial deployment of hydrogen-powered heavy trucks.
